Preliminary Thesis

By using a semi-autobiographical character to demonstrate America’s attraction to wealth, the country’s rejection at financial dependence, and the way in which Americans exhaust themselves by giving to others, Fitzgerald demonstrates the decline of American society during the Depression with the slow deterioration of Dick Diver.

A little wordy, I know.

1. Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose?

Yes. The opposers may take the stance that Dick Diver didnt necessarily deteroriate, or that America's society didnt necessarily declien due to those reasons.

2. Is my thesis statement specific enough?

I felt that you couldve expanded further on how Dick Diver deteriorated, and how Fitzgerald was able to demosntrate this fact. Overall, good.

3. Does my thesis pass the “so what?” test?

Yes. You took a stance, and you elaborated with support.

4. Does my thesis pass the “how and why?” test?

With a little revision, it would pass perfectly. Just elaborate a bit more on how Fitzgerald demonstrated Dick Diver's deterioration. Also, mabye a more detail on the decline of American society.

Overall, your theris was pretty strong. You took your position and supported it with big ideas from the novel. I kinda wished you included more about Dick Diver, in correspondence with your elaborate detail of American people.

I think the wordiness is okay. It makes the thesis clear and understandable. Maybe elaborate more on the deterioration of the Dick River.

1. Yes, some may state that the deterioration doesn't symbolize those things, and that American society was not on the decline.
2. Yes, it was to the point and had a clear meaning, and critical view.
3. Yes, you give a clear side to your argument, and why it matters.
4. Yes, it was a bit wordy in its explaination but it got the point across.
