1. Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose?
Yes. you took the stance stating that Aunt Ultima taught Antonio all his values to guide his future growth.
2. Is my thesis statement specific enough?
Almost. When you say symbolism, dreams, magic, and foreshadowing, you could add some detail to it, but not so much so that your whole paper is given away. Give it by tidbits?
3. Does my thesis pass the “so what?” test?
yes. I felt like it passed it sufficiently.
4. Does my thesis pass the “how and why?” test?
Almost. How does Aunt Ultima teach Antonio? Not what, but how and for what reason did she do it?
Overall, your thesis was very good. It just needs a few minor adjustments. Although i didnt read the book, i can clearly see where you might go with this in your paper
1. Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose?
Almost - I haven't read the book, but I have the feeling Aunt Ultima's guidance as a factor of Anotnoio's growth is a widely accepted belief.
2. Is my thesis statement specific enough?
Yes, you can use the four things Aunt Ultima guides with to develop four sections of your paper.
3. Does my thesis pass the “so what?” test?
Almost- how does Antonio's growth contribute to another aspect of the novel?
4. Does my thesis pass the “how and why?” test?
The first question is answered, and I think you will answer the latter question suffieciently later in the paper.
1. Yes, you expressed your belief that Aunt Ultima gave Antonio a growth in conscience through several different mediums.
2. You could simplify it a bit more, by focusing on the most pertinent subject instead of listing off an array of different ways Aunt Ultima effects Antonios life.
3. Yes, I can see the critical point your trying to, and the argument you are creating.
4. Kind of a too much, you are going to have a harder time if you don't hone in on one topic
Overall - This is a solid start, all that I could recommend is that
you focus in more on your thesis.
Your almost there on taking a position that others may oppose, but be more direct about it. Your thesis passes the So What test and I think that the detail is good. Try expanding more on HOW Aunt Ultima teaches him. Overall, it is good.
